The Side Table Papyrus takes its name and design inspiration from a capital bearing a papyrus motif that once crowned the column of a kiosk built in front of the temple of Amun at Hibis in Egypt’s Kharga Oasis. Dating to 380–343 BCE, the original column at The Metropolitan Museum of Art combines stylized representations of the common papyrus with foxtail flatsedge plants—an early example of the so-called composite capitals that unite decorative botanical forms into one cohesive design. Eichholtz honors this legacy by translating the Egyptian capital’s rhythm and symmetry into the sculptural base of this modern table.
